Hurricane Preparedness 2015


Hurricanes are a yearly concern for us in the Caribbean and though Barbados has been lucky not to experience any for over 50 years, it’s always smart to be prepared.



Before the Hurricane:


Know Your Shelters

  • Create a list of the closest shelters to you and make a plan to get there if you need it.
  • Know your local Animal Shelters as animals aren’t allowed in most animal shelters.

Build an Emergency Kit

  • You should stock up on food, water and medical supplies for each member of your family and pets for at least 72 hours.
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Cash
  • First Aid Kit
  • Battery operated radio
  • Gas for cooking

Prepare to Secure Your Home

  • Keep on hand the storm shutters, pre drilled plywood panels, tape and straps needed to secure the home. Don’t wait until the hurricane warning to source these security measures.

Clean the Yard

  • Keep trees and bushes trimmed to make them more wind resistant. Remove any weak or dead branches to prevent those becoming airborne missiles.

Home and Auto Insurance

  • Confirm that your insurance policies cover for Hurricane damage and are valid.



Under Hurricane Watch:


Fuel the Car

  • Make sure you have a full tank for any emergency.

Clear the Yard

  • Bring all outdoor furniture and garden tools indoors.
  • Anchor any objects too large to be brought indoors.

Secure the House

  • Install storm shutters, plywood panels and straps to doors and windows.
  • Remove small antennae from the roof.

Food Preparation

  • Turn refrigerator and freezer to the coldest settings and only open when absolutely necessary.
  • Store drinking water in clean jugs, bottles and pots.

Stay Aware

  • Listen to the radio and watch the television for weather updates.



During Hurricane Warning:


Safety Precautions

  • Turn off cooking gas ESPECIALLY if the bottle is situated outside.  If the bottle is indoors, only turn on the gas while cooking.
  • Avoid open flames such as candles and kerosene lamps, opt for battery operated light sources.

Hygienic Preparation

  • Fill tub, sinks and other large containers with water for sanitary purposes such as cleaning, hand washing and flushing toilets.


Protect Valuables

  • Keep personal documents, jewelry, electronics and photos in waterproof containers in an elevated spot in the house.
  • Turn off major appliances to reduce a power surge when electricity is restored.

Keep the Lines Open:

  • Even though we all have cell phones, landlines are perfect in a power outage.

Stay indoors away from windows and glass doors.

Be Prepared to Evacuate if:

  • You are directed by local authorities to do so.
  • You live on the coast, in a flood zone or waterway.
  • Your house becomes unsafe.

If You Cannot Evacuate:

  • Go to a wind safe room (small interior room, hallway or closet).
  • Close all interior doors.

Sargassum On Our Shores!

Sargassum is a free floating algae that grows in the Sargasso Sea located in the mid-north Atlantic Ocean. Normally, the ocean currents keep the majority of the Sargassum in that sea except during periods of high winds and hurricane activity. In hurricane season, weeds are broken off and swept towards the Caribbean.

We, in Barbados, are accustomed to this Sargassum in small numbers, seasonally from May to September. However, for the past 6 months we have been noticing an invasion of incredible quantities of Sargassum piling up on the North, East and South Coast beaches due to changing weather and temperature patterns. 

The buildup of sargassum on our beaches is unattractive and has a pungent, unmistakable stench which attracts bugs as it decomposes in the sun. This is a deterrent to locals and visitors from our beaches, coastal hotels and restaurants. Our fragile and important Tourism Industry could suffer as the Sargassum continues to build up on the shores of our island.

On the other hand, the Sargassum does have a benefit. Once rinsed of the salt, it proves to be a great fertiliser for the many farms, fields and home gardens around the island.
